There are certain places in the Florida Keys that seem to capture the personality of the islands almost instantly. No Name Pub near Big Pine Key is one of those places.

It has the kind of character artists love: a little unexpected, a little quirky, and completely memorable.

That personality is exactly what drew me to paint it.

Why I Chose No Name Pub

When I paint a place, I’m usually looking for more than just an attractive building. I’m interested in places that hold memories for people.

The Florida Keys are full of destinations like that.

A restaurant, marina, cottage, resort, or roadside landmark can become tied to a favorite vacation, a honeymoon, an annual family trip, or simply one afternoon that someone never forgot.

No Name Pub has that kind of presence.

It feels unmistakably connected to the Keys, which made it a natural subject for my Florida Keys watercolor collection.

Capturing the Character in Watercolor

Watercolor is especially well suited to painting the Florida Keys because the medium naturally lends itself to light, color, atmosphere, and a sense of movement.

When creating my No Name Pub painting, I wanted the finished piece to feel like more than an architectural illustration.

I wanted it to bring back the feeling of being there.

The tropical surroundings, casual island atmosphere, and distinctive personality of the building all became part of the painting.

That is one of the things I enjoy most about painting recognizable destinations. A finished watercolor can act almost like a visual souvenir, but one that feels personal and artistic rather than mass-produced.

Art Inspired by Florida Keys Memories

Over the years, I’ve painted many places throughout Key West, Marathon, Big Pine Key, Pigeon Key, Islamorada, and the surrounding Florida Keys.

Some are famous landmarks. Others are restaurants, cottages, historic buildings, resorts, boats, and small places that simply caught my attention.

Together, they tell a larger story about the Keys.

For collectors, these paintings often become reminders of a particular place or moment in their own lives.

That connection is one reason I continue returning to Florida Keys subjects again and again.

Painting Places That Matter

Some of my favorite paintings begin with a place someone immediately recognizes.

They might say:

“I’ve been there.”

“That was our favorite restaurant.”

“We stayed nearby every summer.”

“That reminds me of our honeymoon.”

Those reactions are what make painting meaningful places so rewarding.

For me, watercolor becomes a way of preserving not only architecture and scenery, but also the memories attached to them.

And in the Florida Keys, there never seems to be a shortage of places worth remembering.
